LIMS Takes Stand Against Tuberculosis in Inaugural Convention

Lumbini Internal Medicine Society (LIMS) has embarked on a mission to eradicate tuberculosis, marking its first convention as a pivotal step in this commitment.

Dr. Ujjwal Shrestha, Director of the National Tuberculosis Control Center, took center stage as the keynote speaker during the Continuing Medical Education (CME) session focused on Nepal’s National Tuberculosis Program. The inaugural segment of LIMS, held in Butwal, also featured insights from Dr. Prajwal Shrestha and Ashish Shrestha, Senior Technical Adviser at Save the Children, shedding light on the prevalence survey and strategic objectives of the TB program.

Key highlights included discussions on Nepal’s annual tuberculosis patient estimates, ranging from 69 thousand to 1 lakh 17 thousand individuals, along with the nation’s progress, challenges, new initiatives, and recommendations in tuberculosis diagnosis and management of associated complications.

Dr. Prajwal Shrestha, emphasizing the 26 percent burden of tuberculosis in Lumbini province, expressed optimism for collaborative efforts with LIMS to drive progress forward.

Mim Bahadur Singh, Barista Program Manager at Save the Children, underscored the critical role of timely diagnosis and treatment by healthcare professionals, citing projections of around 12,500 annual tuberculosis patients in Lumbini Province. Singh also noted that 7,706 tuberculosis patients were registered in the program for the year 079/80, with an anticipated increase in case detection rates.

Dr. Vishnu Prasad Poudyal, Chairman of Lumbini Internal Medicine Society, affirmed a steadfast commitment to transform the discussions into action, pledging unwavering support to combat tuberculosis within the province.
